You write "Just as Google AdSense grew the entire online ad market by matching long-tail advertisers with long-tail vertical content...". This confuses me. AdSense allows small publishers and bloggers who blog about anything (horizontal sites) to monetize their content with contextual advertising based on the particular page being viewed. If anything, this approach sounds more horizontal content oriented than vertical because it is page specific (not site-wide). GM would like to advertise on Edmunds.com but not on their Auto Loans or Insurance pages. AdSense won't serve GM ads on these pages because it understands the context.

AdSense is a player in all 4 quadrants, isn't it?

Yup, can't disagree that AdSense is used in all 4 quadrants! I'm simplifying and view the lower-right quadrant as the market where they primarily play. AdSense indeed targets the page, not the site or the individual user, and therefore works best on pages that are narrow in context (vertically-focused) vs. pages that have no context or are topically very fragmented. And while there are certainly big $ advertisers buying AdWords, the majority are long-tail advertisers. Thx for the comment!

Google is a major true but there's some other's too. But of course adsense is a player. In this year, I think people are knocking more on http://www.adwido.com type company, to get more from a combination of seo and video content to make sure ads are targeted to right audience.
